I created a two-page illustrated spread that follows the story from the song The Monster Mash without text. This project contains use of both traditional and digital illustrative tools across several styles.
Stylistically, this work was approached with a limited, cohesive, and seasonal color scheme. Expressive shapes were used to form unique characters that would appeal to young audiences. This project involves the interpretation of media into other forms.
The lyrical section selected for this composition is from “The zombies were having fun” through “tell them Boris sent you”.

A single-page spread of a Halloween comic book. The art style is sweet and cartoony, and the colors are largely warm jewel tones.

Sketches

I completed 15 primary sketches in order to explore different visual interpretations of each lyrical section. Shown here is the sketch with the most similar elements between the two.
A rough sketch of a two-page Halloween comic layout. There is text included that shows which images relate to different lyrics from the song 'Monster Mash'.

Refinements

After creating several explorations with different media, I explored different styles. The one shown here uses no lines.
An image of a Halloween comic, created with no lines, instead only shape and value. It seems soft and friendly.

Value and Colors

In order to determine the appropriate color scheme for this work, I began with very simple, toned-down colors that emphasized the value contrasts in the imagery. Later, I applied colors that I felt suited both each other, and the overall seasonal Halloween mood.
