With this project, I was commissioned to create a poster for a client's annual Jazz concert. It was intended to be extremely large-scale, at 36x48. Throughout the design process, the dimensions were adjusted slightly to suit evolving printing conditions.

A poster for a jazz concert, titled 'An Afternoon of Music'. The colors are warm and dark, largely brown, yellow, and dark purple.

Process:

Visual Mood Board

I created a visual mood board to guide my design choices with this project, including a warm, welcoming, classy, and refined style.
A gridlike collage of different reference images. It is a mood board that communicates warmth, classiness, and fall vibes.

Fonts

The fonts analyzed here include Ohno blazeface, Gymnopoedia, Gyra Parody, Broadacre*, Nudgewink Pro, Modula OT, Capitol, Fino Sans, and Casablanca URW. The selected font for this project was Broadacre.
A grid of nine font options. The text reads 'An Afternoon of Music", and the page has been printed, written on with notes about each font, and then scanned in.

Sketches to Text/Graphics

The decorative elements were created in both Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign. The dotted zig-zags call back to the movie theater signs and string/event lights, and the swirling red lines echo strings and sheet music floating out from the poster. This emphasizes the tile and adds subtle texture to the background. The double-lined box around the featured musicians incorporates the Art Deco style and unifies that section of the poster, and I added music notes and horizontal lines above and below the date to balance the title space.
A series of three images, from left to right: a rough sketch of a poster, a digital draft of a poster that is image and text only, and the background graphics of a poster, with no text.
